The Dharma Wheel is a sacred and ancient Buddhist symbol and represents the Buddhist faith universally. After attaining enlightenment, Buddha gave his first teachings and gave a sermon on the first Wheel of Dharma.
The dharmachakra or wheel of dharma is a widespread symbol used in Indian religions such as Jainism, Hinduism and especially Buddhism. Historically, the dharmachakra was often used as a decoration in Buddhist temples, statues and inscriptions, beginning with the earliest period of Srilankan Buddhism to the present.

Further info

The Dharmachakra or “Wheel of Dharma” or “Wheel of Life” is a symbol that has represented dharma, the Buddha’s teaching of the path to enlightenment, since the early period of Srilanka Buddhism. A similar symbol is also in use in Jainism. It is one of the Ashtamangala symbols. The Dharmachakra symbol is represented as a chariot wheel (Sanskrit cakram) with eight or more spokes. It is one of the oldest known Buddhist symbols found in Srilanka art. The Dharmacakra has been used by all Buddhist nations as a symbol ever since. In its simplest form, the Dharmachakra is recognized globally as a symbol for Buddhism. The Noble Eightfold Path (Pali: ariyo atthangiko maggo, Sanskrit: aryastangamarga is one of the principal teachings of the Buddha, who described it as the way leading to the cessation of suffering (dukkha) and the achievement of self-awakening. It is used to develop insight into the true nature of phenomena (or reality) and to eradicate greed, hatred, and delusion. The Noble Eightfold Path is the fourth of the Buddha’s Four Noble Truths; the first element of the Noble Eightfold Path is, in turn, an understanding of the Four Noble Truths. It is also known as the Middle Path or Middle Way. All eight elements of the Path begin with the word “right”, which translates the word samyanc (in Sanskrit) or samma (in Pali). These denote completion, togetherness, and coherence, and can also suggest the senses of “perfect” or “ideal”. In Buddhist symbolism, the Noble Eightfold Path is often represented by means of the dharma wheel (dharmachakra), whose eight spokes represent the eight elements of the path.
